Restore an earlier version

Notes are saved automatically every 10 minutes while you edit. Preview, compare and roll back to an earlier version.

Version history is the set of snapshots the server keeps while a note is being edited. Use it to get back a paragraph you deleted by mistake, or to put a note several people have edited back the way it was yesterday. There is no “save version” button to press — it’s all automatic.

When versions are saved

If you started editing less than 10 minutes ago there may not be a saved version yet. The panel then says “No versions yet — versions are auto-saved every 10 minutes as you edit.”

Restore an earlier version

Open the note and click ⋯ (Note tools) in the note header.
Under Records, choose Version history.
Click a version in the list on the left to preview it on the right.
Once the preview has loaded, click Restore this version.
In the confirmation box, type Restore exactly and confirm. If the text doesn’t match, nothing is restored.

A restore takes effect immediately for everyone and every device that has the note open. The content from just before is kept as a new version, so if you restored the wrong one, just restore that version. Recently restored versions are marked Last restored with who did it, when and on which device.

Compare two versions

Click Text comparison at the top of the version history panel.
In the list on the left, click the version to use as the Base first, then the version to compare it with.
The differences in text are shown line by line.

Only text is compared. Differences in formatting, images and attachments are not shown.

Good to know

People with View only access can preview versions, but the Restore this version button only appears for people who can edit.
For a locked note, unlock it in this session before opening its version history.
If you deleted the whole note, bring it back from Trash, not from version history.
Versions live on the server as part of the note. For a copy you keep yourself, use export and full backup.
