Organize notes with notebooks
Notebooks are folders for notes. You can nest them as deep as you like, and deleting one keeps the notes inside.

Notebooks are folders for your notes. A notebook can hold sub-notebooks as many levels deep as you need, and each note lives in one notebook. If you need to group notes across notebooks, add tags as well. Notebooks you created are under My notebooks in the sidebar; notebooks others shared with you are under Shared with me.
Create notebooks
- Top-level notebook: click the + next to My notebooks in the sidebar (⇧⌘N, or ⇧⌥N in a browser), type a name and press Enter.
- Sub-notebook: click the New sub-notebook icon on a notebook row, or right-click it and choose New sub-notebook.
Notebook buttons and menu
Hover over a notebook row to see its icon buttons. Right-click it, or click ⋯ (More), to open its menu.

Move things by dragging
- Drag a note onto a notebook in the sidebar to move it there.
- Drag a notebook onto another notebook to make it a sub-notebook. You can’t move a notebook into itself or into one of its own sub-notebooks.
- Drag a notebook or note onto the My notebooks section title: ↰ Move to top level appears, and dropping moves it to the top level.
You can also move a single note with the notebook selector (Move to notebook) in the note header, or by right-clicking it in the note list and choosing Move to notebook….
When you delete a notebook
- The confirmation says “Notes are kept and moved to 'No notebook'.” The notes inside don’t go to the Trash; they move to the top level (No notebook).
- Sub-notebooks aren’t deleted with it — they become top-level notebooks.
- A locked notebook must be unlocked before you can delete it.
Notebooks shared with you
- Only the owner can rename or restructure a shared notebook. If you have edit access and are allowed to create notes, right-click it and choose New note to add notes inside.
- Right-click and choose Edit alias & sharing details to give it a private alias (up to 80 characters) that only you see. The same window shows the original name, your permission and the owner’s username. Leave it blank, or choose Restore original name, to go back to the original name.
