Keep a daily note

Click New note for today in the sidebar to create or open a note titled with today’s date. Tasks you accept and recurring tasks collect there too.

Applies to Web · Mac · iPhone app

The daily note is a one-day log titled with the date. Only one is created per day; clicking again the same day opens that note instead of making a new one. It works well as a lab or work journal, and it is also where accepted handoffs, quick-add tasks and recurring tasks land automatically.

Create or open today’s note

  1. Click New note for today in the sidebar. Open today's note in the command palette (⌘K) does the same, as does Today in the tab bar on a phone.
  2. Choose the Notebook to save in. The notebook you have open is preselected if it is yours; you can also choose No notebook (top level).
  3. Click Create or open. If today’s note already exists, it opens where it is, whatever notebook you chose.

A new daily note starts like this:

LineContent
Title (Heading 1)The date and weekday, such as 2026-09-28 (Mon). Korean-language accounts get 2026-09-28 (월).
LabelToday's to-dos
ChecklistOne empty item

How the app recognizes today’s note

Today’s note is a note you own whose title starts with today’s date (YYYY-MM-DD). Notes in the Trash and templates don’t count, and if there are several, the earliest one is used. Dates follow Korea Standard Time, so the day changes at midnight in Korea.

If you remove or change the date at the start of the title, the note is no longer recognized as today’s note, and a new one is created the next time you open it. To personalize the title, add text after the date — for example 2026-09-28 (Mon) cell passage.

What lands in the daily note automatically

WhatWhen
Handed-off tasksWhen you accept a task a colleague handed you, it is added to your daily note. See Accept or decline a handoff.
Quick-add tasksItems you enter in Quick add task at the top of To-dos are saved to your daily note. See Use the To-dos view.
Recurring tasksAdded to the assignee’s daily note at the rule creator’s work start time (09:00 by default) on the chosen weekdays. See Set up recurring tasks.

If today’s note doesn’t exist yet, the app creates it at that moment, under No notebook (the top level) — move it to a notebook if you like. If today’s note is password-locked, recurring tasks are skipped rather than added.

Tips

  • Write to-dos as checklist items and end them with a date or time such as @3pm or @fri so they also appear in To-dos and the calendar. See Add due dates with @.
  • The Today's note widget on Mac and iPhone shows the items in today’s note on your desktop or Home Screen. See Widgets and Apple Watch.
  • To start each day from a fixed layout, create a note from a template and begin its title with the date; it will be recognized as today’s note. If a daily note for that day already exists, the earlier one is used.
