Build figures with figure frames

Combine several images into one figure with lane labels, a legend and automatic numbering (Figure 1.).

A figure frame lays out images in a note the way a figure in a paper looks. Put several images side by side as panels, add lane labels along the top and left, write a figure legend, and the frames are numbered Figure 1., Figure 2. in the order they appear in the note. It is especially handy for labeling lanes on gel and blot images.

Add a frame

Put an image in the note (Attach file/image (⇧⌘O), paste or drag and drop).
Click the image to select it.
Click the Figure frame button in the toolbar, or right-click the image and choose Figure frame (labels & numbering).

If no image is selected when you click the toolbar button, the frame goes around the last image in the note that doesn’t have one yet. If the note has no images, you’ll be asked to insert one first.

Panels, labels and legend

Click the frame’s Figure settings button to open its settings. They are grouped into four sections; click Close settings when you’re done.

Section	What you can do
Image panels	Add a panel with + Image, set Horizontal gap and Vertical gap, and Figure alignment (left, center or right). Dragging another image into the frame also adds it as a panel.
Lane labels	Add cells with + top lane label and + left lane label, even out spacing with ↔ space top labels and ↕ space left labels, set the number of labels (up to 30) and their tilt (Top angle°, Left angle°, −90 to 90), Label font, Label size (px), Label wrap width (px, 0=auto), and nudge individual labels along X and Y.
Figure legend	Legend position (top, bottom, left or right), Legend text alignment, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, font and size for the whole legend, Legend width (Image width, Wide, Max) or a width in px, the gap to the image, and Figure number.
Manage figure	Remove frame · keep images, or Delete Figure (deletes the image panels too).

Click a label cell to type in it. Drag a label’s ⠿ handle to move it freely, or use the arrows next to it to move it a little at a time. Write the legend in the Figure legend — describe the figure field under the image. Legend formatting applies to the whole legend, not to part of it.

Numbering

Figure number option	Result
Automatic numbering	`Figure 1.`, `Figure 2.` … in the order frames appear in the note.
Custom	Whatever you type in Custom number (up to 120 characters), e.g. `Supplementary Figure S2.`
Hide number	No number is shown.

Automatic numbering counts every frame in the note. A frame with a hidden or custom number still takes up a position, so the next automatic number may look like it skipped one.

Remove a frame

Remove frame · keep images removes the labels and legend and leaves each image in the note. Right-clicking an image in the frame and choosing Remove frame does the same.
Delete Figure deletes the frame and all its image panels, after asking you to confirm. If you didn’t mean to, press ⌘Z to undo.
