Delete your account
At the bottom of Account security, review what is deleted and what stays, then enter your password to delete your account permanently.
Applies to Web · Mac · iPhone app · cannot be undone
You can delete your CommonNote account from inside the app. Deletion can’t be undone, and you won’t be able to sign in again. Because CommonNote is a research notebook, records in a workspace you share with other members are kept rather than erased. Before anything happens, the screen shows you What is deleted and What stays.
Before you delete
- Back up first. In a browser, use Back up all notes (ZIP) in the top bar. The ZIP leaves out notes in the Trash and templates, and locked notes you haven’t unlocked in that browser. Restore anything you want to keep from the Trash, unlock locked notes in the same browser first, and choose Unmark as template on templates before backing up (a single-note export keeps only server links to attachments, which stop working once the account is deleted). Then open
BACKUP-INFO.txtand the folders in the ZIP to check nothing is missing. See Export notes and back up everything. - A subscription set to renew blocks deletion. Turn off auto-renewal first — for web payments in Plan & billing → Manage billing & invoices, for App Store subscriptions in Apple’s subscription settings.
- If you are the workspace owner and there are other members, deletion is blocked. In Plan & billing → Team members, use Make owner on another member first. See Workspace members and seats.
Delete your account
- Click your name in the top bar (on a phone, your avatar) and open Account security.
- In the Delete account section at the very bottom, click the Delete account button.
- Under Delete your account?, read What is deleted and What stays.
- Enter your password under Enter your password to confirm and click Delete forever. If you change your mind, click Cancel.
You are signed out as soon as the deletion finishes.
What is deleted and what stays
| Case | Result |
|---|---|
| Always deleted | Your email, display name (nickname), passkeys, sign-in history and notification settings. You can no longer sign in. |
| You’re the only member of your workspace | The workspace’s notes, attachments and notebooks are deleted too. Notes you created and shared with others are deleted as well, so those people lose access. |
| Your workspace has other members | Notes and notebooks you wrote stay in the workspace as research records. The author appears as a deleted user, and author or assignee marks inside the note text may still show your current username. |
The screen tells you which case applies, with numbers — for example “12 notes and their attachments in your personal workspace” under What is deleted, or a count of notes you wrote under What stays.
If deletion is blocked
| Message | What to do |

| Transfer team ownership to another member before deleting your account | Make another member the workspace owner. |
| A wrong-password message | Check your password. After several wrong attempts you have to wait, just as with sign-in. |
