Use tags, favorites and pins

Tags group notes across notebooks, favorites are your personal shortcuts, and pins keep a note at the top of the note list.

If notebooks decide where a note lives, tags, favorites and pins decide how you get back to it. None of them moves the note; they are markers you attach to it.

Add tags

In the note header: type a name in the + tag box next to the tag chips and press Enter.
In the text: type # to see your tags. Pick one, or choose ＋ Create tag '{name}' for a new one. The text keeps #name, and the tag is added to the note (you’ll see “Tagged this note with '#name'”).
Remove a tag: click the × (Remove tag) on its chip in the note header. Any #name text in the note stays until you delete it yourself.

Only the note’s owner can add or remove tags. The + tag box doesn’t appear on notes shared with you or on notes in the Trash.

Browse and manage tags

Click a tag in the Tags section of the sidebar to list only the notes with that tag. The number on the right is how many notes have it.
Right-click a tag and choose Rename to rename it on every note at once. You can’t rename it to a name you already use.
Choose Delete tag and confirm (“The tag is removed from every note.”) to remove it. The notes themselves aren’t deleted.

Favorites

Click the star (Add to favorites (⇧⌘S)) in the note header, or press ⇧⌘S. Do it again to remove it.
In the note list, right-click and choose Favorites, or drag the note onto Favorites in the sidebar (Drop to add to favorites).
Click Favorites in the sidebar to list only your favorites; use the arrow next to it to collapse or expand the favorites list in the sidebar.

Pin to the top of the list

In the note header, open ⋯ Note tools → This note → Pin to top of list, or press ⇧⌘P.
In the note list, right-click and choose Pin or Unpin.

Pinned notes stay at the top of the list with a pin icon, whatever sort order you choose. With Group by date on, they lead their own date group instead. The pin is saved on the note, so it also rises to the top for people the note is shared with.

The Recent list

Recent in the sidebar shows five notes: the ones you opened recently on this device come first, and any remaining slots are filled with recently edited notes. Each device keeps its own opening history. To take one off the list, hover over it and click × (Remove from recent). Opening the command palette (⌘K) with nothing typed also shows your recent notes.
